Jane began her career in journalism, starting as a Co-op student at her hometown newspaper, The Patriot Ledger, while attending Northeastern University. After graduation, she reported on the 1976 Presidential race for Foster's Daily Democrat during New Hampshire’s first-in-the-nation primary and later served as Executive Editor for the Mariner Newspapers, a chain of 18 community newspapers on the South Shore.

In 1995, Jane transitioned to politics, joining Philip W. Johnston’s congressional campaign as spokesperson. When Johnston was elected Chairman of the Massachusetts Democratic Party in 2000, he appointed Jane as Communications Director, a role she held until 2005, after which she launched her consulting career at Johnston Associates. Following Johnston’s passing in 2025, Jane joined Smith, Costello & Crawford, where she continues to provide strategic communications and policy guidance.
